The right quote at the right moment can elevate a wedding speech in a way that nothing original quite manages. The wrong one can make it feel borrowed rather than personal. This collection covers the quotes and readings that actually work in wedding speeches — and how to use them correctly.
What a Speech Smith speech looks like
A short sample — your speech will be personalised to your stories and people.
Quotes that work in wedding speeches: On love and partnership: "You don't love someone for their looks, or their clothes, or for their fancy car, but because they sing a song only you can hear." — Oscar Wilde (attr.) "Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same." — Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights "I have waited for this opportunity for more than half a century, to repeat to you once again my vow of eternal fidelity and everlasting love." — Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera On friendship and knowing someone deeply: "Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive." — Anaïs Nin "To love is to recognise yourself in another." — Eckhart Tolle Brief poems that work: "i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart) i am never without it" — e.e. cummings "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." — Elizabeth Barrett Browning (use the whole sonnet only if it's short context) What to avoid: "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return" — too familiar "All you need is love" — same problem Anything from The Notebook

What makes this speech work
Every detail you share becomes part of your speech. Here's what to think about.
Choose quotes that resonate with you personally
The room can tell whether a quote means something to the speaker. If you found it on a list five minutes before writing the speech, it will feel like it. Use something you genuinely connect with.
Introduce every quote with a line of context
One sentence before the quote — why you chose it, what it means to you, how it applies to this couple — is what makes the quote land. Without that context, it's just borrowed words.
Shorter is almost always better
Two to four lines is the right length for a quote in a wedding speech. Longer than that and you're asking the room to sit through something unfamiliar while the speech pauses.
Check the attribution before you use it
Many popular 'quotes' are misattributed or fabricated. If you're going to name someone, make sure the attribution is accurate. Getting it wrong doesn't just embarrass you — it changes the authority of the line.
Place it near the end, not at the beginning
A quote before the room knows who you are and why you're there asks them to interpret unfamiliar words without context. Near the end of the speech, when they're emotionally engaged, it lands much more powerfully.
Frequently asked questions
The Notebook. 'All you need is love'. The dictionary definition of marriage. Any quote from 'The Alchemist' used out of context. Any 'anonymous' quote found on Pinterest. Use any of these and the room will recognise them instantly.
Yes — a personal, specific reference to something the couple loves is often more meaningful than a 'classic' quote. If it means something to them and you explain why, it will land.
Yes. If you're going to read a poem or quote, know it by heart or at least glance up while you say it. Reading a quote with your head down kills the moment completely.
Yes — some of the most memorable wedding speech lines are original ones written specifically for the couple. They don't need attribution; they need to be true.
You can add quotes yourself after generating the speech. The structure Speech Smith produces will show you exactly where they would sit best.
